Investor Category
Definition
A classification of investors by type and typical investment stage, used to define the financial materials and compliance level expected from a company seeking investment from each category. The FFI Standard defines five investor categories: angel, pre-seed institutional, seed institutional, Series A venture capital, and Series B growth equity. Each category has a defined expectations matrix specifying the minimum financial infrastructure required for a productive engagement.
Common Misapplication
The most common misapplication is preparing one uniform set of financial materials for all investor conversations regardless of investor category. Angel investors and Series A investors require materially different levels of financial detail and financial infrastructure, and preparing Series A materials for angel conversations wastes time.
